For sewing and clothing construction and all that. [shrugs] It’s what I’m good at.
Doing what you’re good at is always a smart choice.. but, do you really enjoy doing it?
[visibly relaxes, this being a much safer topic of conversation] Textiles. I’m a grad student.
Textiles? That’s not a very common major. Why’d you choose that? -sets down his now empty tea cup-
.
[shrugs, feeling very awkward] I don’t know any married people, otherwise I’d ask.
Well, to each their own, anyway. -clears his throat- So, uhm, are you studying at the university?
[flushes] Oh. [clears her throat, staring into her tea] Uh, no, we haven’t.
Well, most people recommend a long engagement, right?
[flushes, hiding a smile by sipping her tea] Mhm. No big.
-drinks his tea in silence for a moment- So, have you two picked a date yet?
[snorts, going back to her tea] Put it on the ceiling, if you want. It’s your bloody shop, y’dafty. [gives him a blank stare, her voice monotone] No, I found a very skilled Dachshund who was wicked with a needle. [shakes her head, as if to say ‘bless your little heart,’ smirking] Of course I did it.
-chuckles a little, finally looking at her- Well, you’re very talented. And I really do like it. -sets it down on the table for now after looking at it for another minute, then debates on whether or not to give her a hug, deciding to awkwardly pat her hand instead- Thank you.
[sips her tea, glancing at the bookshop once again] …I guess I can understand that. A bit. [sips her tea, then suddenly her eyes go wide and she sets down her cup, digging around in her bag] I forgot the whole bloody reason I came over here! [tugs out a twelve-by-eight hand-painted gilt frame, which holds a lovely floral cloth with the quote, ‘Not all who wander are lost.’ embroidered across it in careful, curving script] You needed something for the wall. Rather bare in here. [smiles hesitantly, waiting for his reaction]
-sets down his cup as well, awkwardly folding his hands in his lap- What’re you.. -blinks a few times as he looks at the embroidery, then slowly reaches out and takes it- It’s.. great, really, I-I love it, Sally. -looks around, anywhere but at her- I can uh.. put it up near the desk? -gently runs his fingers over the stitching- You did this?
